8. Al- Arabiya Baina Yadaik1 (Units 1 to 8)

Course description

This course is aimed at complete beginners. In the course you will develop an understanding of the principles of phonology and script of the Arabic language. You will also gain useful vocabulary, an understanding of basic grammar and the ability to express yourself and communicate at a basic level. You will learn and practice the language using the four language skills in Arabic – reading, writing, speaking and listening – through the use of audio and visual materials. This course will also allow you to become familiar with some aspects of Arabic culture. Much of time is devoted to oral dialogues and conversations about how basic interactions are run.

Course Objective

By the end of Unit 8, students will:

  • Demonstrate basic skills in the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening
  • Demonstrate the ability to translate simple sentences
  • Have acquired the skills to read simple Arabic text
  • Be able to use simple sentence structures in speaking and writing
  • Have become familiar with some aspects of Arabic culture

Evaluation and Grading Policy

Each week around 20 minutes are devoted to reviewing the vocabulary and grammar covered.

Homework: 20%

Reinforcement exercises are assigned daily, with students expected to spend an average of 2 hours of homework every week. Exercises will consist of written and oral assignments, and may include finding new vocabulary items and expressions while listening with the aim rehearsing strategies of picking up and understanding sounds. Participants are supposed to submit the exercises within the indicated deadlines; otherwise the exercise is not accepted, which will affect the course grade.

Class Participation: 15%

The aim is to:
*Express your views
*Ask questions in Arabic
*Make suggestions
***Read the assigned lessons ahead of class time to familiarize yourself with the specific vocabulary and content of the Unit and thus you will be able to follow class discussions and rehearse your vocabulary.

Oral Presentation: 20%

Two oral presentations are scheduled during the program. The choice of subjects is open to students to decide about and the time of presentation is limited to 15 minutes maximum. The choice is also to the participants’ to present either individually or in groups.

Quizzes: 25%

There will be one quiz per unit to prepare the student for the final assessment for both of the written and the oral exams. They aim at keeping up with the previously covered issues related to different skills; namely: grammar, vocabulary, expressions, conversations, listening, reading and writing.

Written/Oral Examination: 35%

This includes a mid term and a final assessment that last one hour and a half each.
